What I was missing out on when I wasn’t strength training : Empowering benefits of strength training for women.

In my 13 years of experience as a coach I’ve witnessed the narrative surrounding womens fitness evolve. A big number of women are recognizing the importance of strength training in achieving holistic well being. Far beyond just building muscles, strength training offers numerous health benefits that contribute to a strong, resilient and empowered lifestyle.

Bone Health : Is one of the often overlooked advantages of strength training for women and its positive impact on bone health. As an Indian girl born in the 80's with no internet, not many gyms, I was never made aware of what an impact strength training could have on my health especially in my 40’s. As we all age, the risk of osteoporosis increases, but resistance training helps enhance bone density, reducing the likelihood of fractures and osteoporosis related issues.

Metabolism Boost  : Strength training contributes to an increased metabolism, aiding in weight management and fat loss. As we build lean muscle mass our bodies become more efficient at burning calories, even at rest. This can be particularly beneficial for those seeking weight control and improved body composition.

Enhanced FUnctional strength: Strength training goes beyond aesthetics. It enhances functional strength, making daily activities easier and reducing the risk of injury. It will help you significantly in improving your posture, balance and coordination, translating into a more active and fulfilling lifestyle.

Hormonal Balance especially for PCOS, Diabetes and  Perimenopause :

Regular strength training has been shown to positively impact hormone levels, including estrogen and insulin. Maintaining hormonal balance is crucial for overall health and can contribute to a reduced risk of conditions. I've personally seen a huge change with PCOS management thanks to strength training.

Heart Health :

Cardiovascular health is a concern for everyone and strength training complements heart health by lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels.

Mental Well being

Strength training is not only about physical strength but also mental resilience. The sense of accomplishment you feel from progressing in weightlifting can boost self esteem and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exercise , including strength training, has been linked to the release of endorphins, promoting a positive mood.

Empowerment and Confidence

Engaging in strength training fosters a sense of empowerment and confidence. Breaking stereotypes and societal norms, women who embrace weightlifting redefine notions of femininity and strength, cultivating a mindset that extends beyond the gym and into various aspects of your life.

As a coach and a woman all I can say is strength training is a cornerstone of women's health offering benefits that extend far beyond the physical. From improved bone health to increased metabolic efficiency and enhanced mental being. As more and more women recognize the importance of resistance training and bodyweight training a new ERA of strong, confident and resilient women shall emerge redefining traditional notions of women's health and fitness.
